TexasDPS_logoThe Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) will place special enforcement emphasis on the Move Over/Slow Down law, that requires drivers to move over or slow down for emergency vehicles stopped on the side of the road with emergency lights activated.

DPS troopers across the region will be stopping violators who fail to obey the Move Over/Slow Down law.  The law states that a driver must either vacate the lane closest to the stopped emergency vehicle (if the road has multiple lanes traveling in the same direction) or slow down 20 miles per hour below the speed limit.

The emergency vehicles protected by the law include police, fire, EMS, TXDOT and tow truck vehicles.  Violation of this law could result in fines up to $200.  The punishment could be more severe if there is property damage or injury.
