The Dollar General Literacy Foundation announced that Family Services Center is to receive a Summer Reading grant this year. The grant funds will be used for the READ (Read, Discover and Dream) Children’s Summer Reading Club to be held June 8th through July 27th.

Registration begins at Hastings , Saturday May 15th, 2pm-6pm. There is a $10 registration fee. Scholarships are available. Registration will continue through June 1st at Family Services Center , Monday – Friday, 8am-5pm.

A child’s early years of learning develop the foundation on which all future learning will be built. Family Services Center will offer the READ Children’s Summer Reading Club to help strengthen the foundation of learning for children entering Pre-K through 3rd graded.

“The club theme for the summer, ‘ Reading is a World of Fun’, gives us room for topics ranging from plant and bugs to dances from other countries.” said Kristi Slocum, volunteer program director. “ Reading can take you to far away places that you might never get to actually see. I want all children to experience that.”

Children will meet Tuesday mornings, starting June 8th from 10am-noon for story, song, art and games. The planned activities are intended to build literacy skills in math and reading. On the last Tuesday of the month instead of the morning club meeting a family fun night will be held.

Parents are a child’s first teachers. Involving the whole family in the program strengthens the child’s ability to learn.

Parents are welcome to attend the parenting seminar, Active Parenting Now while the children participate in the club activities. More information about this nationally recognized program is available at activeparenting.com. There is no charge for the Parenting Seminar and child care is available for children not attending READ when the parents are participating.
