Doil S. Hammons, age 95, of Brownwood passed away Thursday, July 31, 2014 at Senior Care of Brownwood.

Funeral Services for Doil will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, August 3, 2014 at Coggin Avenue Baptist Church with Rev. Tim Skaggs and James Ervin officiating, interment will follow at Eastlawn Memorial Park.  Visitation for the family and friends will be held Saturday evening from 6-8 at Blaylock Funeral Home.

Doil was born on February 15, 1919 to George and Lula Belle (Chadick) Hammons in Weinert, Texas.  He graduated from Knox City High School in 1937 as Valedictorian; and from Texas A&M in 1942 with a degree in Architecture.  He went on active duty with the U. S. Army in 1943 serving in the Infantry in the European Theatre as a Second Lieutenant.  After leaving the Army at the end of WWII, he taught at the school of Architecture at Texas A&M for approximately 5 years.  After teaching he joined the private construction industry in Bryan, Texas and a short time with a construction company in San Antonio, Texas before ultimately starting a Civil Service career with the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers.  He retired with 36 years of service which included his time of service with the U. S. Army Reserves.  He retired from the U. S. Army Reserves as a Lt. Colonel.  After retirement he worked for Campers on Mission.  He was also very involved with the Heart of Texas Baptist Camp.  Doil was a member of Coggin Avenue Baptist Church since 1997 and served as a Deacon.

Doil is survived by his daughter, Janice Patterson and husband Donald of Brownwood; sons, George Hammons of Sachse, Texas, Scott Hammons and wife Doris of Perry, Georgia; sister, Dealva Marshall of Richardson, Texas; one granddaughter, Michele Patterson and one great granddaughter, Samantha Strange both of San Antonio, Texas; grandsons, Doil Hammons of Macon, Georgia and Steven Patterson of Lago Vista, Texas.  He is also survived by numerous other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Elva Hammons; and parents.  In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to:
