Tuesday, June 4, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) launched its “Heads up, Texas” campaign that aims to address and discourage all forms of distracted driving when behind the wheel.

The 2019 campaign kicked off with a press conference in San Antonio and the return of a 12-city, virtual reality distracted driving experience tour in collaboration with AT&T It Can Wait to illustrate the dangers of distracted driving.

TxDOT also shared some local behavioral distracted driving data:

  • According to TxDOT Crash Data and Analysis*, the number of motor vehicle traffic crashes in the City of Brownwood in 2018 that involved distracted driving (distraction, driver inattention or cellphone use) totaled 54. These crashes resulted in 2 serious injuries.
  • According to AT&T It Can Wait**, nearly all Texans surveyed consider smartphone distractions to be dangerous while driving, but about 8 out of 10, or 84 percent, admit they do it.
