My name is Dennis Graham. I’m running for a Board of Directors position with the Brown County Water Improvement District #1. BCWID #1 has three positions that are up for election May 12th. Early voting begins April 30 and I would appreciate your support and vote.
My family has been residents and property owners in Brownwood for over 40 years. The Graham family has lived in or near Brownwood for 130 years. We take great pride in calling ourselves Texans. I’m running for a board position because I’m concerned about the future and want to be more involved with decisions involving our community. Our actions concerning BCWID #1 should include viable short-term decisions as well as long-term vision. Good decisions will provide future generations with the same opportunities and great way of life we share today in Central Texas. We all know the value of water, especially with our recent drought; this is why I want to serve you on the BCWID #1.
Our current board members have served for many years. The average board member has served for more than 15 years. One board member has over 40 years service. With a long tenure of service, some citizens think this is an appointed position, but it is elected. Currently you can only vote if you reside within the district which consist of Brownwood and Early, and I think that this must be changed. I believe that all citizens should have the opportunity to vote and serve for this very important board.
The BCWID #1 can be confusing on who can vote and who can’t vote. The reality is that many citizens who live in the Brownwood area cannot vote or serve as a board member, because BCWID #1 has not amended district boundaries that were set up decades ago. This issue must be addressed. Some citizens cannot vote or run because they reside outside of the BCWID #1 boundaries, yet their home is located within the city limits of Brownwood. I believe all citizens who are serviced by BCWID #1 should have the opportunity to serve and vote for this position.
When you vote, you can choose to vote for one, two, or three candidates, but remember this is not a majority election. This is a plurality election. The three candidates with the most votes will be your board members for the next four years. If you choose, you can vote for one candidate only – the decision is yours.
For the last 40 years, I have been in business management, working for publicly-owned companies as well as privately-owned. I have served in a variety of senior-level management positions with Airgas, including President. Airgas is a Fortune 500 company which is publicly traded. My work experience has provided me with the knowledge necessary to serve you and our surrounding community as director for BCWID #1.
I have owned and operated two successful businesses locally here in Brownwood. The first was Brownwood Welding Supply Inc., which we sold to Airgas in 1990. Currently, I own HCD Graham Investments LLC. My wife, Kimberly, manages H.C.D. Graham Investments LLC, which consists of residential & commercial rental property.
We have two sons who graduated from Brownwood High School. Our older son lives in Austin and our younger lives in Brownwood. When I’m not working, I enjoy traveling with my family, golfing, fishing and raising my racing pigeons. I currently serve as a board member for the Boys & Girls Club and the Boy Scouts Texas Trail Council and Vice President of Kiwanis. I worship at Coggin Avenue Baptist Church.
Thank you for your support, your time & vote…Dennis Graham
