2:30 PM Update:  Brown County Sheriff’s Office released the following information regarding the death of a Brown County Jail inmate Tuesday morning:

According to Sheriff Bobby Grubbs, the Brown County Sheriff’s Investigator Scott Bird, assisted by Texas Ranger Jason Shea, is conducting an investigation into the death of an inmate at the Brown County Jail.

On February 11, 2014, around 7:00 a.m., the Brown County Jail took into custody 33-year-old Courtney Ruth Elmore.  The Brownwood Police Department had arrested Elmore at 401 W. Commerce Brownwood, Texas for the possession, use, inhale, or ingest of a volatile chemical around 6:45 a.m.  It had been reported that she was abusing industrial strength “Ultra Duster” as a means of becoming intoxicated.

“Ultra Duster” is canned air, and is designed to be used to dust off computers and other electronic devices.   Elmore was intoxicated upon being booked into the Brown County Jail, but was able to answer question related to personal information.  Elmore was showered and placed into a holding cell with another female inmate.  This inmate reported to officers that she and Elmore had general conversations about being in jail.

Around 9:00 a.m. Elmore was checked on by the jail staff and appeared to be okay and sleeping.  At approximately 9:13 a.m., a jailer watching the holding cell on a live video feed observed Elmore fall to the floor from a seated position.  Jailer’s responded to the cell and found Elmore was not breathing and had no pulse.  CPR as well as defibrillator was utilized as rescue efforts on Elmore while Guardian EMS was in route. Elmore was transported by Guardian EMS, to the Brownwood Regional Medical Center.

Elmore was pronounced deceased, after attempts by the emergency room staff to revive her where unsuccessful.  The Brown County Sheriff’s Office as well as the Texas Ranger are continuing the investigation by reviewing jail video and interviewing witness in relation to Elmore’s condition while in the Brown County Jail.

Elmore’s body will be delivered to the medical examiner’s office for an autopsy.  At this time no official cause of death has been determined.
