The Welcome W. Chandler chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas hosted the District II Workshop in Brownwood recently.
DRT chapters from the central Texas area convened to discuss recent changes in the organization’s 106 year history as custodians of the Alamo.
Newly elected president of the DRT, Karen R. Thompson, attended and called on fellow members to continue the strong heritage of DRT by advocating the preservation of Texas history. In addition, other Board of Management officers were in attendance as well as many district representatives from across the state.
The Daughters of the Republic of Texas is an association with 106 chapters divided into 10 districts. Each chapter is a part of the larger organization and must operate within the framework of Bylaws established by the Association. The Alamo has been managed by The Daughters of the Republic of Texas since 1905.
One of the DRT’s key purposes is “to perpetuate the memory and spirit of the men and women who achieved and maintained the independence of Texas” and to encourage historical research into the earliest records of Texas, especially those relating to the Revolution of 1835 and the events which followed.
Among the topics discussed at the workshop were the 2012 topics for the annual Texas History Essay Contest for students in the fourth and seventh grades. DRT has offered annual essay contests for fourth grade and seventh grade students (public, private, or home schooled) who are studying Texas history. The fourth grade topic is “Bigfoot Wallace or Susanna Dickinson, Survivor of the Alamo,” and the seventh topic is the “Battle of San Jacinto.”
The agenda at the workshop also included updates on the application procedure to DRT, upcoming fundraisers, and renovation/building projects for the custodial properties of the DRT.
The Welcome W. Chandler represents the Brown County area. Local members planned and hosted the event. The workshop was held at the Howard Payne University Mabee Center. The evening before the workshop event attendees enjoyed a classic Underwood’s barbeque meal.
