Daniel Carl McGhee, also known as “Coach McGhee,” 76, of Bloomfield Indiana, died peacefully in Katy, Texas, on January 20th, 2020.
Dan is survived by his brother, Gary McGhee, and his sister, Dawnell McGhee Gregory, Candace McGhee, the mother of his children. Scott McGhee and his wife, Christina McGhee, their children Ryan, Raegan, Madison, and Emmalee McGhee, Chod McGhee and his wife, Debbie along with their son, Hayden McGhee, Jason McGhee and his wife, Tami and their children Cullen, Brendon and Chole King, as well as, Morgan and Alexandria McGhee, Thelma McGhee, mother of Heath McGhee and Jamie McGhee James and her daughters, Makenzie and Mendi James and his former wife, Pamela McGhee. He was preceded in death by his daughter K’Cee Ruth McGhee, who passed shortly after her birth in 1983.
Without a doubt, Dan was someone who never met a stranger and will always be known as a person who touched many lives on and off the court.
He loved basketball and started his career as an exceptional athlete by becoming an all-state player at Bloomfield High in Indiana. He later decided to serve his country and was enlisted as a member of Special Services, where he played on an All-Navy team for five years.
Following his service, he enrolled at Howard Payne University and played basketball, where he ranked seventh as an HPU career scoring leader with 1,694 points – he was also in the top 10 in rebounds, field goals, and free throws.
After Howard Payne, at the age of 28, Dan was drafted by the Dallas Chaparrals, a former American Basketball Association team. Following his tryout, he decided to put his education to good use and became a teacher, as well as a basketball coach. He coached for 28 years. During his career as a coach, he mentored two All-American players, Bonnie Buchan (from May, Texas) and Miki Atkins (from Hillsboro, Texas.)
Following his coaching/ teaching career, he semi-retired and owned and operated a local convenience store in Brownwood, Texas. During that time, he became a local figure in his community, known for his friendly demeanor and his charming personality.
Later in life, he moved closer to family, where he spent his final years.
Visitation will be from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Davis-Morris Funeral Home in Brownwood, Texas, on Friday, January 24th.
Funeral services for Dan will be at the same location on Saturday, January 25th, at 2:00 PM. Dan will be laid to rest at Oakwood Cemetery in Comanche, Texas. Those wishing to leave a note or share fond memories of Dan with his family may do so at the Davis-Morris website.
