A Forage Seminar will be held on January 21, 2020 in Cross Plains. This annual event has become one of the premier educational programs concerning forage production and hay in our region. The seminar will take place at the First Baptist Church in Cross Plains. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m., and the program will start at 9:00 a.m. Texas Department of Agriculture continuing education units will be offered at the Forage Seminar. Topics will include:
- Herbicide update and what’s new for 2020,
- Prescribe burning: the importance of burning coastal fields and pastures,
- Prussic acid in Johnson Grass and control of Johnson Grass,
- KR Bluestem biology and control in coastal fields and other invasive weed species,
- The importance of a healthy soil,
- Pesticide laws and regulation.
Individual preregistration is $25 by Jan. 17th and $30 thereafter. Pre-register by calling the AgriLife Extension office in Callahan County at 325-854-5835. Fee due upon arrival and includes a catered noon meal.
Following the Forage Seminar, the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) for Callahan, Eastland, Coleman, Comanche and Brown Counties and the local Soil and Water Conservation Districts cordially invite the public to attend their FY21 Local Working Group (LWG) meeting. The meeting will start 30 min. after the forage seminar.
The purpose of this annual LWG meeting is to set local conservation priorities and bring conservation stakeholders together to discuss conservation topics and issues relevant to helping local County farmers and ranchers better conserve on-farm natural resources.
The agenda of the meeting is to update attendees on recent conservation efforts and to collect public input to help guide future conservation activities. Farmers, ranchers, conservationists, and others interested in obtaining Federal technical and financial assistance to improve private land are invited to participate.
