Brownwood High School Cross Examination Debate Teams competed this past weekend in the Brock UIL Invitational Meet.

The team consisting of Nick Bennie and Raymundo Delgado placed 3rd and the team of Erin Collier and Emily Harding placed 6th in the tournament.

These teams are debating the current UIL CX Topic, Resolved:  The United States federal government should substantially reduce its military and/or police presence in one or more of the following:  South Korea, Japan, Afghanistan, Kuwait, Iraq, or Turkey.  Teams must research the topic and prepare a case with a plan that complies with the topic.  They must also prepare both to defend their own case on the affirmative side and attack other teams’ plans on the negative side.  Each person on a team must give an 8 minute constructive speech, cross examine an opponent for three minutes, and give a five minute rebuttal speech during each round.  In a typical tournament, teams will debate in at least three rounds and debate both sides of the issue at least once.

On Tuesday these two CX Debate Teams, in addition to the team of Katy Jacobs and Aime Hogue, will travel to Big Spring to compete in the UIL District Cross Examination Debate meet.  They will be competing against teams from Big Spring and Abilene Wylie.  The top two teams at the district meet will advance to the UIL District State Meet held in March in Austin.
