The Brown County Commissioner’s Court met today in special session with only one item on their agenda.
Commissioners approved a Resolution concerning the FEMA Base Flood Elevation for Lake Brownwood and surrounding areas. The commissioners discussed this resolution last Thursday at a joint meeting with City and Brown County Water Improvement District officials concerning FEMA’s attempt to raise the base flood elevation levels.
Concerns are that if FEMA does raise the base flood elevation, many residents will be forced to purchase flood insurance who have never owned it before and those who already have flood insurance will see an increase in their rates.
County Judge Ray West said today, “The public is not as aware as they should be on this issue.”
See our coverage from last week’s joint meeting for more details of this issue HERE.
In today’s resolution, the commissioner’s made a small change in the verbiage of the original proposed resolution. In the first line of the resolution, the words Flood Map Modernization Project was added. Originally it was called a Flood Map Modification Project.
The rest of the resolution essentially does two things:
- request that FEMA consider the 10 feet above spillway level is a reasonable base flood elevation
- request to meet with FEMA representatives to substantiate the position of Brown County related to the base flood elevation.
