MeadowConradConrad Meadow passed away Wednesday, July 31, 2013 at his home near Blanket, Texas surrounded by his family.

Conrad was born 8/11/1929 to William Walter (W.W.) Meadow & Essie Vella (Horn) Meadow in Ingram, TX; he was 5th of 7 children.

Conrad was born to a life of ranching, although his family moved often during his younger years, and after service in the US Army during the Korean War he returned to the family ranch in Hunt, TX to work the land he loved. He married the free spirited Barbara Cade in 1955 and raised sons Philip and Jeff. He was known for several innovations in ranching such as “Cow Stairs” allowing cows to climb from the valley to a pasture atop the hill, saving many hours of herding and stress on livestock.

He gave freely of his time to things that mattered most to him: First was family and friends: he loved his family, wife,  his own children and numerous “adopted” ones, grandchildren & great-grands.  As for friends he would say “a rich man counts his money but a truly rich man cannot count how many friends he has.”  Education, he was a member of the Hunt, TX school board for 12 years where he was instrumental in allowing the first black children to attend. And set the standards for which the school is known for today.  Disabled/Underprivileged children: he was a 30+ year member of the Hunt Lions Club where he donated much time to the Lions Club Camp for Crippled Children. Church and community:  He organized a barn raising for a friend who lost his pig barn in a fire finishing in one day. He was a Deacon in the Hunt Baptist Church and in the Blanket Baptist Church. He and Barbara moved to Blanket in 1990 to retire after his stroke where he continued his active commitment to family, friends and community.  Despite a slight speech impairment, he greeted you with his big infectious smile, and hug for the girls and a very “firm” hand shake.

Conrad was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years Barbara. His parents, 3 brothers: Wayne, Garth & Keith. And 3 sisters: twins Vernice & Bernice and Mildred.

He is survived by sons Philip & his wife Remo of Aurora, CO and Jeff & his wife Beth of Blanket, TX.  Six grandchildren and 4 great-grandsons: James Meadow and his wife Kelly of Eugene, OR; Jennifer Single terry and husband Jason with their sons Cade and Gus of New Braunsfels, TX; Justin Meadow and his wife Lisa with their son Cash of Blanket, TX; Wayne Meadow and his wife Crystal with their son Wyatt of Blanket, TX; Holley Higgins and her husband Andrew of Carrolton, TX; and Wynde Priddy of Denver, CO.  Sister-in-law Cleo Meadow of Ingram, TX; and Brother-in-law Dudley Cade and wife Candy of Ingram, TX.

Visitation will be Friday, 6-8pm at Heartland Funeral Home; Memorial services will be Saturday 10am at Heartland Funeral Home and Internment will be at Sunset Cemetery in Mountain Home at 3pm.
