Project Sweat wrapped up on Thursday afternoon proving to be quite an endeavor this year with church youth groups working together for the common good of the community by cleaning lots and painting several homes in the area.
Approximately 75 junior high and high school students along with some recent graduates and youth ministers worked on five homes this week which were located in Early, Brownwood and at Lake Brownwood. Churches involved in the project included Coggin Avenue Baptist Church, First Baptist Church Brownwood, Early First Baptist Church, Southside Church and First United Methodist Church.
According to Southside Church youth minister Justin Southall, the project has gone well.
“We are on schedule for most of the homes,” said Southall who explained that most of the work planned was able to be completed. “The kids did a great job. They worked hard.”
Youth involved in the project were at Southside Church each morning at 6:30am to have a quick breakfast and then get to work on the homes, often staying until 3:00pm or later. The work was done at no charge to the home owners. Groups cleaned yards, scraped and painted the homes and provided a little company for elderly residents they worked for.
Most of the kids had smiles on their faces and plenty of paint splattered on their clothing by the end of the projects but learned a big lesson on serving others.
“It was fun to see the results when we finished,” said Lauren Tipton, a youth participant from Southside Church. “It felt good to serve people who cannot do things themselves and to see the smiles on their faces when it was all done.”
