Brownwood Police Chief Mike Corley announced that Brownwood has been selected to receive a recognition award for the National Night Out event held in October of this year.
“Yesterday, we received some great news from the National Assoc. of Town Watch,” Corley said in a statement. “As you probably know, we submitted documentation of our National Night Out so that we would be considered for an award in our population category (15,000 to 49,999). In short, we won national recognition for our efforts in 2011.”
The area won the Rookie of the Year award in 2010 for the National Night Out event, but for this year’s event, Brownwood was recognized and beat out hundreds of other communities.
“Brownwood is listed at number 42 out of a total of 48,” said Corley. “Yesterday, we called NATW and found out that 310 agencies submitted award applications in Category 4. After hearing that, we are even more proud.”
Chief Corley explained that the event was made possible through a cooperative effort by many local agencies.
“Please remember that this was a combined effort between Brownwood PD, Brown County Sheriff’s Office, Early PD, and Bangs PD, and of course the community of Brown County,” Corley said. “The Chamber of Commerce was a great partner, and we especially thank all of our corporate sponsors, the biggest being the Heart of Texas Crime Stoppers.”
Other local sponsors included WT Harris Company, ATMOS Energy, Oncor Electric Delivery, Southside Church, TexasBank, and Waldrop Construction.
The notification letter states that the actual award will arrive within a couple of weeks according to Corley who stated that some type of presentation will be planned upon its arrival.
National Night Out (NNO) is a nationwide event designed to strengthen relationships between residents and local law enforcement. During the 2011 National Night Out in Brown County, over 50 block parties were held in back yards, streets, parks, apartments and driveways. City officials, law enforcement officers, fire departments, and EMS traveled to the block parties around the county. This was the second year the area has participated in the event.
