No fireworks ban will be in place for the New Year’s firework season since the county is in “good shape” and has adequate moisture to allow holiday festivities, according to Brown County commissioners. Although Commissioner Richard Gist of Precinct 3 expressed his opinion of exercising care and urged commissioners to consider possibly banning aerial fireworks with sticks and fins, a 3 to one vote to take no action on a fireworks ban was cast in Monday’s commissioners’ court.
The last ban on fireworks use and sales ran from July 2-5, 2011 due to the lack of rain and dry conditions. The use of all fireworks is prohibited inside the city limits of Brownwood, Early, Bangs, and Blanket at any time.
Commissioners also opted to pass on adopting a new burn ban as well. Commissioners agreed with the recent rain at this time, no ban was necessary.
In other matters on Monday’s agenda:
* Elections Administrator Suzy Young received approval of hiring Josh Holmes as a seasonal part time employee, a replacement for an employee who left in October. Holmes has helped the elections office with the last election and has some training already. Holmes will be able to work during the next elections; however he has joined the Marines and will be leaving in June.
*Commissioners recessed and reconvened at the Brown County AgriLife Office for a presentation of the Extension Programs Interpretation. Scott Anderson, Nick Gonzales and Misty Petty presented information regarding program participation, accomplishments and 4-H involvement on a county level to commissioners. Programs included ranged from livestock to golf and food & nutrition Projects.
