The Coliseum Annex building located at 110 Greenleaf in Brownwood is in the midst of extensive renovations to become the new Senior Citizens Recreation Center.
Brownwood Parks & Recreation Director David Withers gave the Parks & Recreation Advisory Committee members a tour of the building on Wednesday afternoon to go over the progress and what the new facility will have to offer.
The Fain Construction Group is working on the renovations and is making good progress.
“They are looking to have this competed by the end of March, but I think they are going to be finished before that,” Withers said. He went on to say that their current progress is actually ahead of the working timetable.
The possible early completion is just the start of the good news. Withers said that it also looks like the project is going to be competed under budget as well. $1 million was budgeted for the project & Fain Construction Group’s bid was for $627,875.
Withers said, “I have purchased $100,000 of kitchen equipment as well. We will have enough money to re-do the roof and still be under budget.”
The new Senior Citizen Recreation Center will feature a large game area which will have game tables, a pool table, and couches set up for a reading area. There will also be a large kitchen with walk-in refrigerator/freezer, a large eating area, offices, and plenty of storage.
Withers said that when the building is not being used by the senior citizens, the city can rent out the game area and eating area for special events with access to restrooms and the kitchen if needed.
“Flooring will be a laminate type flooring, commercial grade,” Withers said. Colors and design of the flooring were yet to be determined.
