No, I’m not pushing a premium movie channel package with your current television provider! I’m referring to the Brown County Coin Club’s 4th Annual Coin Show which will be here soon.
This event will be held at the Heartland Mall, in the vacant Corral West Western Wear store, on Friday, February 15 from noon to 6:00 pm, and on Saturday, February 16, from 10:00 am to 5 pm. Admission is free.
This show provides a taste of what collecting coins is all about. It is also a great time to get acquainted with the coin club. Feel free to approach a member and ask one of us what the club is all about. This event is not a big fundraiser for the club; it is held for the benefit of community members, interested local folks, and to promote the hobby of coin collecting.
We have lost a couple of dealers from last year, but we have gained several new dealers who will be making their first appearances at our show. Right now, we have about 20 dealers from across the state and at least four of the club members will have tables, including me. The Central Texas Treasure Hunters Club will have a table, too, to introduce you to metal detecting, another great hobby. One of the four “reputable” grading and authentication firms, ANACS, will be there to take your submissions for grading.
We have dealers who specialize in gold coins. At least one dealer comes who specializes in paper money. Several have a few foreign coins, if those are your interest. Several will buy your coins if you want to sell. Usually there’s a dealer or two who will buy your junk silver and gold jewelry, and give you a fair price.Last year we had one dealer whose wife sold vintage jewelry. . . she cost me a hundred bucks because my wife came and browsed!
As I write this, silver melt value is $31.95 an ounce. That means pre-1965 dimes contain $2.31 in silver value; quarters, $5.78; and half dollars, $11.55! It might be time for you to clean out your sock draw and cash in on those old quarters you put back years ago!
In addition, we will conduct a drawing for three separate prizes. Two winners will end up with one ounce American Silver Eagles, worth about $40 each, and one winner will receive a 1/10th ounce gold American Eagle, worth about $175. Those tickets will be $1 each, or 6 for $5. Winners need not be present to win.
And, don’t forget—coin collecting is a fascinating (and sometimes profitable) hobby. Learn more about it at one of our meetings. The Brown County Coin Club usually meets on the second Tuesday of each month, at 6:30 pm, at the Family Center of the Austin Avenue Church of Christ. Enter through the new children’s fenced-off play area on the west side of the building. There’s probably at least one club member who shares an interest with you and would encourage you. Get involved in making your own unique coin collection!
Because we will be working on the final details of our show, we have moved the meeting up to the first Tuesday this month. So, we hope to see you on Tuesday, February 5 for our next meeting. Call Robert Rollins 325-201-6390 or me at 325-217-4129 for more information.
