Local Brownwood photographer, Scott Coers, won “Best Overall Image” in the fourth annual Stars of Texas Digital Photo Shootout on Saturday, January 30th. The competition is similar to the Stars of Texas Paint-Off event in that a digital photograph is to be completed within a set period of time. Participating photographers were asked to capture an image of something old within the city limits. Coers’ picture, “The Vet” was a black and white composition featuring Bill James, a retired Naval Veteran, enjoying an afternoon with friends and fellow veterans at the VFW.

This year’s Photo Shootout was sponsored by Bostick’s Auto and Truck Sales as part of the Stars of Texas Juried Art Exhibit. The contest began at noon on Saturday with 18 participating photographers. Competitors were given three hours to produce fully edited photos ready for judging. This year’s Photo Shootout juror was Mr. Ben Sum, Associate Professor with San Angelo State University’s Art Department.

“The intent of the event is to show that photography is a little more involved than pointing a camera at something and going ‘click.’ It requires knowledge of competition, colors, contrast. We hope to educate the public to see the photographers putting their knowledge to work, telling a story with their photograph, and seeing the artistry that is involved. It’s more than just hitting a few buttons,” said Roger Levesque, Photo Shootout event coordinator.

Coers’ winning photo will be on display as part of the 18th annual Stars of Texas Juried Art Exhibit at The Depot Saturday February 7th-19th. For more information about the exhibit and other events, visit their website: www.starsoftexasjuriedartexhibit.com.
