The Brownwood Lions have one scrimmage behind them as they look to the next one this Friday as the official opening of the 2009 high school football season fast approaches.
Excitement is building in the community as the first season under Head Coach Bob Shipley begins, and with the first Brownwood Lions scrimmage against Lubbock Monterrey behind them. Coaches can now begin to evaluate the performance of the team and individual players.
Coach Shipley took a few minutes out of his busy schedule to comment briefly on how he thought the first scrimmage went and his thoughts on players pushing for starting positions.
BrownwoodNews.com: Did the scrimmage go as expected?
Shipley: I was pleased overall with our effort. We made some mistakes that I thought we were past, but really it’s just the end of the first full week of pads so it’s to be expected. We looked really good at times and really bad at times.
BrownwoodNews.com: Did the scrimmage help determine any starter positions or is it still to early to tell?
Shipley: We learned a lot about many kids and will continue to evaluate through the San Angelo Central scrimmage before we shore up our starters for the opener. Competition is always good and we will have guys continuing to compete for spots all season long.
BrownwoodNews.com: Were there any stand outs or surprises?
Shipley: There were some bright spots and some disappointments which is typical for the 1st scrimmage. The key will be which guys can learn from their mistakes and continue to improve.
Brownwood is scheduled to scrimmage San Angelo Central this Friday. The season opener is set for Friday, August 28th against Burnet at Gordon Wood Stadium.
