stateparkbiketrailLake Brownwood State Park will open their first mountain bike trail in March, and State Park officials are holding a clean-up day at the park this weekend to prepare for the opening.

According to officials at the park, the addition of the bike trail will enhance the park experience for all who visit.

“This is good for our park and our community as it will provide another activity for our customers to enjoy,” said State Park Police/Park Interpreter Stephen Gober.

Bike trails are a great way to exercise and are also therapeutic according to Gober.

“We are dedicated to providing outdoor recreation opportunities to connect people with the natural and cultural resources around them,” Gober stated.  “A trail provides a way to escape the stresses of everyday and connect directly with nature. We are very excited to provide this to the people of Brownwood and everyone else that enjoys this park already.”

Those who would like to help prepare for the new bike trail’s opening, or those who are interested in volunteering to help the park, are invited to participate in a clean-up day to be hosted at the Lake Brownwood State Park on Saturday, February 22nd from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Please bring boots or hard sole shoes, gloves and water as the group will be cleaning up an area near the Nopales Ridge Trail.

In the coming weeks, a couple of events will be hosted to promote the park and the new bike trail.  To celebrate the opening of the trail, the Brownwood Chamber of Commerce will host a ribbon cutting on Tuesday, March 4th at 11:00 a.m. and there will be a grand opening celebration with a 5K run/walk on March 8th.

Lake Brownwood State Park is one of the area’s treasures.  The Civilian Conservation Corps, helped develop this park and numerous others over 70 years ago.  The park is located at 200 State Highway Park Road 15, just 16 miles northwest of Brownwood.  Activities include picnicking, camping, hiking (2.5 miles of hiking trails and a 0.5-mile nature trail), boating (motors allowed), water skiing (jet skis allowed), fishing, nature study, swimming (in an unsupervised swimming area), and bird watching.  Soon the bike trail will open and added to this list of activities to enjoy while at Lake Brownwood State Park.
