The Parks Project of the City of Brownwood has been well received so far. City Manager Bobby Rountree reported that the Senior Center has seen high participation as has the Camp Bowie Family Aquatic Center. Construction continues on the athletic fields which have been slowed by the recent rains.
The Aquatic Center has been open nine days now and has seen a crowd every day, including rainy days. The average attendance has been 550 per day with the exception of the one rainy day that had only 74 in attendance. There were four days over capacity and 16 parties have already been scheduled after hours. One of which will be “Splash Day” for city employees and their families this Thursday.
Rountree mentioned a request for time that swim lanes could be opened and that a time is being considered possibly 11:00am-12:30pm. Having the pool open for a longer season is also being considered; however, the loss of lifeguards due to going off to college and participation in sports creates the need for more lifeguards to make this possible.
The numbers of the new pool are more than were expected and in comparison to the average daily attendance of the old Camp Bowie Pool, which was 125/day.
“This certainly is more than substantial, to show that our investment is being well utilized,” stated Mayor Stephen Haynes.
