A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 26, at the Austin Avenue Church of Christ, for Charlie Trigg, longtime resident of Brownwood, who passed away Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2011, at the age of 86.
Charles William Trigg was born in Denton, Texas, on April 1, 1924, to Charles Westbrook Trigg and U. A. Mathews Trigg. His family moved to Brownwood when he was a small child, and he attended Brownwood public schools. He was a 1940 graduate of Brownwood High School. He attended Tarleton State College, Kemper Military Academy, and the University of Vermont and served in the Army Air Corps during World War II.
Charlie Trigg was married to Eloise Wood in Brownwood on June 7, 1947, beginning a devoted partnership that lasted 62 years until her death in 2009.
Charlie joined his father in business, which encompassed real estate development, an agency for Farm and Home Savings, and the Trigg Insurance Agency. The Trigg family business was a fixture in the Brownwood business community for over 60 years.
Charlie was always actively involved in Brownwood civic affairs. He was a member and president of the Brown County Child Welfare Board, the Brownwood Rotary Club, the Brownwood Public Library board of trustees, the Brownwood Real Estate Board, and the Brownwood Junior Chamber of Commerce. Charlie was a Boy Scout leader and a volunteer with the Red Cross, where he taught first aid classes. In 1956, he was named Brownwood Man of the Year under 35. He was active in the Brownwood Chamber of Commerce most of his adult life. He was repeatedly elected to the Brown County Water Improvement District’s board of directors, serving for more than 40 years. While on that board, he held the positions of president, vice-president, and secretary, and was involved in landmark projects such as the new Lake Brownwood Dam and the new spillway project.
Charlie was a longtime active member of the Austin Avenue Church of Christ, where he served as deacon. He also served on the board of Cherokee Home for Children.
Charlie enjoyed a wide range of interests. He raised cattle, goats, and a few rattlesnakes at the family farm outside of Brownwood. He loved the outdoors. He grew serious tomatoes. He enjoyed group trips to Fort Worth, Dallas, or Austin, to catch an opera or a ballet. Not many people saw more Brownwood High School football games. Throughout his life, he loved being a part of the effort to make Brownwood grow and prosper. He was a kind man of many friends, a gentle presence, and a most unique and generous sense of humor.
He is survived by his daughter, Carolyn Trigg and husband Joe Haggard of Austin; his son, Mike Trigg and wife Stephanie Reese of San Antonio; his son, Tim Trigg and fiancée Katrina Williamson of Brownwood; his grandchildren, Michelle Trigg, Charles Trigg, and Genevieve Haggard; his great-granddaughter, Kylie Gutierrez; his brothers-in-law, “Cotton” Wood of Brownwood and James Touchstone of Spring; his sister-in-law, Joy Gabel of Phoenix; his aunt, Gina Mathews of Nacogdoches, Katrina’s son, Greg Williamson; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Eloise; and his sister, Mary Alyce Trigg Touchstone.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Cherokee Home for Children, P.O. Box 295, Cherokee, TX 76832, or the Brownwood Lyric Theater, P.O. Box 68, Brownwood, TX 76804.
