Charles was born Roy and Betty Winfrey on November 25, 1925 at Sipe Springs, TX.  Charles grew up in Brown County and graduated from Bangs High School in 1943.  Charles and Betty Jo Heffington graduated from high school together.  They fell in love and married July 22, 1944, and were married 49 years.  He answered the call to service by serving in the Army.  He served God and county with pride in France, Germany, and Austria in the 65th Inf. Div. in WWII.  Charles was honored with a Bronze star for meritorious achievement in battle.  We have truly lost another member of “the Greatest Generation.”

After returning home from the service he worked for Earl Clements and Son Wholesale Co. in Brownwood for 3 years.  Charles then moved to Odessa to raise his family and start his vending and wholesale business, West Texas Distributing Co, which he owned and operated for 20 years.  Betty owned and operated fabric centers in Odessa and Pecos.  They later sold the business and he became Vice President of Del-Tex in Odessa for the next 10 years, until he retired.

Charles lost Betty to cancer on March 31, 1993.  He then moved back to Brownwood to care for both of their aging mothers.  Charles served as President of Bangs Cemetery Association for 6 years and served on Bangs Food Pantry Board for 5 years.  He was also a member of the Bangs chapter of the American Legion.  He loved his Bangs Dragons and had season tickets to all the home football games.

He attended and was a deacon at Crescent Park Church of Christ in Odessa for many years.  The Bangs Church of Christ has been his spiritual home for the last 19 years.  He has been very active in the work of the church and helping with the Bangs Church of Christ Youth Camp in Cisco and Brady, TX.

Charles was lucky enough to find love again when he met June (Barnett) Luman.  They decided to blend their families and were married July 30, 1994.  They have had a loving 19 year marriage.  Charles and June loved to travel and their greatest joy was spending time with their families and friends.
