Funeral Services for Charles Dexter Cole “ Pete”, age 89, of Brownwood, will be held Saturday October 22, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Brownwood with Rodney McGlothlin officiating, interment to follow at Zephyr Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday evening at Davis-Morris Funeral Home. He passed away Wednesday, October 19, 2011 in Brownwood, Texas.
Charles was born on September 10, 1922 in Zephyr, Texas to Robert Bishop and Bessie Lee (Gist) Cole. He married Betty (Dotson) Cole on July 11, 1953 in McCamey, Texas. He was a high school graduate of Zephyr High, and then received a bachelor’s degree from Daniel Baker College in 1950. Charles served in WWII in the Army Air Corps during 1942 and received a Patriotic Medallion of Honor and Respect for his achievements in that war. He worked at Stanolind Seismograph, and then became Postal Clerk for the U.S. Post Office for 30+ years. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church, in McCamey and in Brownwood, where he served as a deacon. Charles became a long-time Brownwood Lions fan, and Howard Payne basketball fan. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Charles also enjoyed fishing, gardening, and a variety of sports.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Betty Cole; daughter, Betsy Johnson of Brownwood; son, Michael Cole and wife Lisa of Seabrook; five grandchildren, Alicia Jaramillo and husband Chris of San Antonio, Jennifer Brown and husband Curtis of Dallas, Levi Cole and wife Ashlyn of Lufkin, Amber Brown and husband Jeffrey of League City and T.C. Johnson of Brownwood. He is also survived by three great-grandchildren Rico & Domenic Jaramillo of San Antonio and Teagan Brown of Dallas; two brothers, David Cole and wife Virginia of Hamilton, and Ned Cole and wife Jean of Port Arthur; sisters Mamie Lee Whitenton of Odessa and Minnie Bess Cutbirth and husband Treldon of Brownwood; two sisters-in-law Erma Lee Cole of Thrifty and Yvonne Cole of Austin; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Charles is preceded in death by his parents Robert and Bessie Cole, and two brothers Robert Cole and Ted Cole. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Building Fund or Brownwood Regional Medical Center Auxilary Scholarship Fund.
