First Baptist Church Brownwood has opened its doors to 154 campers during Spring Break for their 8th Annual Champs Camp, teaching how to play sports like a champion based on the virtues of Bible.
Leaders are using stories of bible heroes such as Abraham, Joseph, Elijah, Jonah, Samson, Daniel, David, Matthew, Paul, Joshua, and Jacob to teach lessons of being a champion. The students also have a chance to learn a little about sports such as soccer, basketball, football and volleyball.
Volunteers include local adults but also students from Lamar University (in Beaumont, TX), Howard Payne University, local high school and junior high schools.
“They have chosen to spend their Spring Break ministering,” stated Celeste Church, Interim Children’s Ministry Director at FBC. “This is the fifth year students from Lamar have come to Champs Camp.”
Children from kindergarten through 6th grade are enjoying the sports-based Christian day camp which is designed to aid families who have a need for child care during the week of spring break. The ministry opportunity, offered by FBC Brownwood, is spearheaded by the Children’s Ministry of the church.
The campers are divided into 13 groups, which have team names associated with the Bible heroes they are learning about.
Leaders state that the kids are really excited to learn the sports.
“The 3rd & 4th Grade girls are the group that learned football the fastest,” said youth minister Austin McIntosh.
“Even the kindergartners have done some sports, learning the basics,” stated Church.
Parents will have a chance to learn a little about what their kids have been learning and doing all week by attending “Parent’s Night”. Thursday from 5:15-6:30pm, Parent’s Night will be held at the “Brick” (otherwise known as the FBC gym).
