Jean Miller, 79 of the Kurten-Edge community passed away Tuesday morning April 23, 2013 in her home. Jean was the wife of Dr. Frederick Miller, professor-emeritus, Department of Soil & Crop Services, Texas A&M University. A time to visit with family will be Thursday, April 25, at Hillier Funeral Home in Bryan from 5-7:00 p.m. Services are scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on Friday, April 26, at Zion Church in Kurten, Texas, with interment to follow at Kurten Cemetery.
Jean was born April 1, 1934 in Bangs, Texas to Charley William and Myrtle Ann Sparks. She married her loving husband, Fred Miller August 24, 1958 at the First Methodist Church in Bangs, TX. She was a member of the Zion Church of Kurten. Jean was a dedicated homemaker and guide for her family.
Jean grew up in Bangs, TX, graduating High School there and subsequently attended University of North Texas in Denton. She worked in banking prior to the birth of her first child. Jean accompanied her husband to Texas A&M University and helped put him through college. Jean and Fred took a Texas A&M assignment to work sorghum research in Puerto Rico from 1965-70. She was active in the English speaking church in Mayaguez, where she taught Sunday School and led many activities for women. Jean’s second son was born while residing in Puerto Rico. Upon returning to Bryan-College Station, Jean became a teacher and manager of Kinder Care Daycare, where she had a long and loving impact upon hundreds of children and their parents.
Jean enjoyed her retirement in her country home where she raised beautiful flowers and gardens which she shared with neighbors and friends. She truly had that unique ability to stimulate love and compassion with those she met in life and was a strength to those around her.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Francis Ann Burns.
Survivors include her husband of almost 55 years; sons, Charles Frederick Miller and wife Victoria of Bremen, Maine and Robert Lance Miller and wife Sue of Vega, Texas; brother, Charley Wade Sparks of Lake Charles, LA; sister, Martha Jo Bredemeyer of Lancaster, TX; and a niece and nephew.
