The 2016 Best of Show Award was given to Elise Techentine of Granbury for her sculpture “Balance on the Edge”

Organizers are getting set to host the 19th Annual Stars of Texas Juried Art Exhibit February 5-17, 2017 and encourage artists to prepare for the call for entries on January 27th and 28th at the Depot Civic and Cultural Center.

Artists may bring their completely dry, framed work between the hours of 5:00-6:30 p.m. on Friday, January 27th or Saturday, January 28th from 9:00 a.m. to noon.  Visit their website for rules and media accepted for consideration at this year’s Stars of Texas Juried Art Exhibit. Pictured above is the 2016 Best of Show winner Elise Techentine of Granbury for her sculpture “Balance on the Edge.”

This year’s juror will be Ben Sum, Professor of Art at San Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas. Sum received his Master of Fine Arts degree in painting from Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas. He currently teaches course work in painting and drawing. Before moving to San Angelo, Mr. Sum was a member of the art faculty at Western Texas College in Snyder, Texas. Mr. Sum has conducted many figure drawing and portraiture workshops in the West Texas area and at the Hong Kong Visual Art Center, as well as participated in many mural projects in Hong Kong and in West Texas.

An active artist, Mr. Sum has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions throughout the United States and overseas. He is a recipient of the Hong Kong Arts Development Council Grant. Mr. Sum’s work is held in both public and private collections.

The exhibit itself will open to the public February 5th through 17th at the Depot Civic and Cultural Center in Brownwood.

The Salon des Refusés will open once again to artists to display their works that do not make the 2017 Stars of Texas Exhibit and will be held at the Brownwood Art Association Art Center which is located at 215 Fisk Avenue.  The Salon des Refusés will also be open from February 5th through 17th.

  • Saturday, January 28 – 9 a.m. to noon – Drop off entries at the Depot Civic & Cultural Center
  • Saturday, January 28 – Juror judges entries noon to 4 p.m.
  • Works not selected must be picked up on Saturday, January 28, 4 to 5 p.m.
  • Saturday, January 28 – 11:00 a.m. to noon registration for the Digital Photo Shoot-Out Competition
  • “Art Talk” – Saturday, January 28: Free to Stars of Texas entrants. Jack Maxwell, Professor of Art, Abilene Christian University will be at the Adam Street Community Center, 600 Adam Street at 1:30 p.m.
  • Art work for the Salon des Refuse`s will be accepted at the Art Center, 215 Fisk Ave from 4 to 6 p.m. on January 28.
  • Saturday, February 4 – Opening Reception and Awards Ceremony – 7 to 9 p.m.
  • Saturday, February 17 – 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. registration for the Paint-Off Competition
  • Saturday, February 18 – End of Exhibit – Pick up Art Work – 11 a.m. to 1 pm.  Selected works must remain in exhibit until 11 a.m.

Monday – Friday: 9 a.m. – 6 p.m.
Saturday:  10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Sunday:  1 p.m. –  4 p.m.
