The no. 8 Lady Jacket basketball team stayed undefeated with a 51-49 win over Ozarks University after Hope Hohertz scored with .08 seconds, trailing 48-49.
Hope Hohertz led Howard Payne with 12 points and eight rebounds. Her last bucket was the most exciting as she made a layup of baseline inbounds pass from Brittany Zamora with .08 left in the game. She was also fouled on the play, her free throw was good for the 51-49 win.
An equal exciting end the first half when Roshonda Gayden stole the ball with 6 seconds remaining and scored a layup at the buzzer tying the game 27-27.
In the first half the Lady Jackets were 10 of 31 from the floor for 32 percent and 5 of 17 from the arc for 29 percent. Ozarks went 10 of 32 from the floor and were 4 of 16 beyond the arc.
In the second half the Lady Jackets chased the Eagles the whole time. The winning shot by Hohertz was the first lead for HPU in latter part of the second.
Neither team shot very well in the second, HPU was 22 percent while Ozarks was 29 percent from the floor. HPU out-rebounded Ozarks 54-40. Ozarks had 20 turnovers to HPU’s 16.
Ozark’s Sabrina Goddard led the Lady Eagles with 21 points and 9 rebounds. Behind her was April Young with 15 points and 5 rebounds of her own.
HPU’s Roshonda Gayden had 8 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Katy Sarem had 11 followed by Elaine Hobbs with eight, and Hohertz led with 12.
Howard Payne moves to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the ASC action. Ozarks falls to 1-5 overall and 0-3 in the ASC play.
The Lady Jackets next game is at home Saturday Dec. 5 at 1pm against University of Texas at Dallas.
