Brownwood Lions – Brownwood Head Football Coach Sammy Burnett underwent emergency surgery on Sunday, November 17th.  Five days later, he watched from the press box as his Brownwood Lions defeated Alvarado 37-35 last Friday night in Denton.  Where will he coach from this Friday afternoon when the Lions play Argyle in Waco?

In his radio show on Wednesday afternoon on KOXE, Burnett said he has been debating where he will coach his Lions from.  “I’m going to be in the box, probably.  I still don’t think I’m ready to get on the sideline.  I’ve got a great system put in place where I can communicate with Coach Jones anytime I want to, able to call plays when I want to.  I’ve got some great guys doing a great job of that,” Burnett added.  With that said, he didn’t rule out being on the sideline.  “It may be a game time decision,” he said.  “I feel wonderful. God is good and he’s taking care of me.”

Scouting Report on the Argyle Eagles

Controlling the clock and moving the football on the ground are going to be key this week for the Brownwood Lions, according to Coach Burnett.  Argyle is undefeated this season entering the game.

The Eagles offense is lead by quarterback Bo Hogeboom.  Also a good baseball player, Hogeboom has committed to play baseball for the University of Houston.  He is 6’0″ and weighs 205 pounds.  “He has 53 touchdowns this year throwing the football so that’s a big number for what they do,” Burnett said.  In the running game, they rely mainly on Tito Byce and Luke Farris who combined for 24 rushing touchdowns this season.  “They’re a run team, run team, run team then they’re going to press you vertically and throw deep,” Burnett said.  In the air attack, watch for #5 Cole Kirkpatrick and #6 Alex Gonzalez.  They combined for 38 of those touchdowns.  Tight end, #88 Gus Sanchez III, has 7 touchdowns.

Burnett said Argyle is extremely big up front.  “They make La Vega look little,” Burnett said.  “They move a little slower than we do so we’re going to try and play with great leverage up front and beat them with speed,” Burnett said.

To keep the high-powered Eagle offense off the field, Brownwood plans to control the clock.  “If we control the clock and play a slow game, which no one likes but I think it benefits us, I think we can keep them off the field.  If we do that through the course of the game I think that limits them to two less opportunities,” Burnett said.

On the defensive side of the ball – “They play a Brock style defense, that old Celina defense.  They’ll play nose, 3’s and 5’s, and have one backer sitting there in the middle, and a safety in the middle, their job is to play the run.  They’re going to man up on you outside,” Burnett said.   “You’ve just got to let it go because there’s no tomorrow,” Burnett said.

Game time is 1:30 pm Friday afternoon at McLane Stadium on I-35 in Waco.  There is no parking fee this week.  Tickets are $10 at the gate.  The Lions are the home team.  The ballgame will be broadcast on KOXE 101.3 FM Radio.
