OathofOfficeTuesday was a historic day in Brownwood Texas as newly elected Mayor Stephen Haynes was installed taking the place of retiring Mayor Bert V. Massey II who has served 26 years in the office.

Also installed to office at Tuesday’s City Council meeting were newly elected Councilmen Draco Miller and H. D. Jones.  This marks Jones’ return to office after moving to a new Ward and forcing him to seek office through a special election.

Haynes, Miller, and Jones all won their seats during municipal elections that were conducted on Saturday.  The race for the Ward 2 council seat still sits vacant as candidates Ed McMillian and Eddie Watson will participate in a runoff election on June 12th.

Tuesday was a memorable city council meeting filled with many firsts and lasts.   Massey signed his last proclamation as mayor which recognized National Public Works Week which was presented to city employees Don Hatcher and David Harris.  Massey also recognized the city’s finance department by acknowledging the Texas State Comptroller’s Leadership Circle award for financial transparency.

The most notable moment however came after Massey, along with outgoing Councilmen Darrell Haynes and Dave Fair stepped down and became spectators as the new mayor and councilmen finished out their first meeting.

The newly installed and outgoing officials were surrounded by family and friends to commemorate the historic moment.  City Secretary Christi Wynn administered the oath of office to the new mayor and councilmen closing out one era and marking a new beginning for the City of Brownwood.
