NationalNtOutBrownwood Police Department recently received notification from the National Association of Town Watch (NATW) that the City of Brownwood will receive a “Rookie of the Year” award for 2010.  Brownwood was one of only 9 communities nationwide to receive this award.

Nationally, this year’s event, the 27th Annual National Night Out, involved 37.0 million people in 15,110 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories and military bases worldwide.   This was the first year for Brown County to participate in the event.

Event Coordinator, Chandra Means of the Brownwood Police Department, worked hastily after the event and prepared a scrapbook documenting the success of the first year of the October 5th event in Brownwood and surrounding area, which helped secure the award.  It was reported that 39 neighborhoods across Brown County held cookouts, pot luck dinners, and block parties to celebrate the area’s first National Night Out.

Law enforcement agencies, firefighters, and emergency responders visited with citizens at their neighborhood gatherings and encouraged them to be proactive against crime.  The coordinated efforts of the Brownwood Police Department, Brownwood Fire Department, Brown County Sheriff’s Office, Early Police Department, and Guardian EMS helped to make the evening not only informative but a true success.
