In December, students from Coggin Elementary, Brownwood Intermediate School, and Woodland Heights Elementary competed in the 2013-2014 UIL District Meet that was hosted for the first time at Coggin Elementary.

Students from Gatesville, Burnet, and Lampasas also competed in the competition that covered a wide range of subjects including Oral Reading, Ready Writing, Dictionary, Music Memory, Spelling, Chess Puzzling, Number Sense, Social Studies, and more.

“We had several teachers come up here and work the event,” said Coggin Elementary Principal, Todd Lewis. “It was a lot of work, and everyone did a great job.  We’re proud of all our students that participated.”

Five fourth-grade students from Coggin Elementary placed in their events and two were selected Best Alternate:  Mo Goff (1st place – Reading Writing), Seth Oines (2nd place – Number Sense), Lillie Deeds (2nd place – Oral Reading), Raelynn DeBaga (3rd place – Reading Writing), Weston Burns (4th place – Chess Puzzling), Adriana Mendoza (Best Alternate – Spelling), and Gracie Boswell (Best Alternate – Ready Writing).

Fifth-grade students that placed from Brownwood Intermediate school included: John Monson (5th place – Dictionary Skills), Diego Lopez (2nd place – Dictionary Skills), Emily Carnes (4th place – Dictionary Skills) , Becca Church (4th Place/tie – Listening), Jonathan Hagood (4th Place/tie – Listening), Christian Fijer (4th Place – Music Memory), Elbijana Thaqi (5th place – Music Memory), AnnBeth Hood (3rd place – Spelling), Lora Briley (4th place – Spelling), and Trevor Bowers was selected as Best Alternate in Dictionary Skills.

The Woodland Heights Elementary chess team, coached by Dr. Boren, took the first 3 places in the UIL competition, and were awarded as follows:  Andrew Boren (1st place), Eli Goodrich (2nd place), Jackson Yoder (3rd place), and Peyton Wells (Alternate).
