The BHS choir stopped by the Brownwood ISD central office on Wednesday, November 7th, to perform music they had rehearsed in support of Veterans Day. Selections performed included “The National Anthem”, “All That They Had They Gave”, and “I’m a Yankee Doodle Dandy”. A video of the performance is viewable on the Brownwood ISD website.
Special Veteran’s Day events are also scheduled on Friday morning for East Elementary and Northwest Elementary:
On Friday, November 9th, at 7:50 a.m. East Elementary will be honoring the military, including those currently serving, those who have served and those who have given their lives for our country. After meeting at the flag pole, Nanda Wilbourn, East Elementary Principal, will recognize guests including Veterans from the VA that have been invited, soldiers from Camp Bowie, and parents who are currently serving in the military. “I think it’s important that we teach our children to honor those who have served and are serving our country,” said Wilbourn. “We do this assembly each year at the flagpole around Veteran’s Day. I always cry and explain to the children that I am not crying because I am sad but because I am grateful for the men and women who have given their lives so that we can live in such a blessed nation. Many of our children have never heard ‘Taps’ or have never sung ‘The Star Spangled Banner.’ I always tell them that the next time they are at a football game or an event where the National Anthem is played, I want them to sing loudly! I also want them to think about why we pledge our allegiance to the flag and maybe the words we say every morning will take on new meaning to them.”
A performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner”, a reading of the poem “In Flanders Fields”, and a performance of “Taps” by Karissa Means from the BHS band are among the activities planned.
Northwest Elementary will be holding their Veterans Day Program Friday, November 9, at 8:15 a.m. in the front parking lot of the school. Northwest students will be singing “The Star-Spangled Banner” and “This Land Is Your Land.” High school scouts Aaron Pulley, Jon Tobias, and Robert Dick will be posting the colors. Eagle Scout Aaron Pulley will tell the history and purpose of Veterans Day. Howard Payne sophomore, Megan Irwin, will play “Taps” on the trumpet to conclude the program.
Another special Veterans Day display is planned at Brownwood Middle School, where they are putting together a “Wall of Honor” in the digital media center. It will feature photos of family members of BMS students who are serving or have served in the military.
