It was a busy Halloween weekend for Brownwood Police Officers with several unrelated calls on assaults, public intoxication, and possession.
Man Assaulted with Sledgehammer & Crowbar
On Saturday night, Officer Brandon Miller was called to a 7-11 convenient store on Austin Avenue regarding an assault. The victim of the assault told police that he had been driving on Vine Street and slowed his vehicle to travel through the underpass. The victim further explained that a large white truck hit his vehicle from behind as he went through the underpass. The man pulled into a gravel lot after the collision and the truck pulled in front of him blocking his way back onto Vine.
The victim told police that as he sat in his vehicle a “heavy” man with a sledgehammer exited the truck and approached his vehicle. According to the police report, the man swung the sledge hammer at the victim’s windshield shattering it and yelling “You need to learn how to drive the speed limit.”
The victim also told police that a second man with a crowbar approached his vehicle, struck the passenger window, completely shattering the glass. The police report states that the man, still with the crowbar, stuck both of his arms in the victims vehicle swinging the crowbar and striking him in the arm. The victim stated that a third passenger from the truck stood by and watched.
The victim said that he left the scene and arrived at the 7-11 where he called police. Guardian EMS arrived to evaluate the victim’s injuries. Suspects are currently unknown.
Assault By Man in Gown
Late Saturday night, Officer Brandon Miller was dispatched to Pizza Hut regarding an assault. An employee told police that while he was on a break behind the business, he saw a man wearing a black “gown” touching another employee’s motorcycle. The employee told police that he thought the person was trying to steal the motorcycle so he said something to him. The victim believed that he surprised the man in the gown, who then hit him in the head with an unknown object. The victim received two lacerations his forehead according to the police report. The man in the gown fled on foot. The victim was transported to Brownwood Regional Medical Center for treatment.
Wreck Leads to Drug Arrest
Friday night Officer Chandra Means responded to a traffic accident on CC Woodson Road behind Big Lots. The driver of the vehicle and the passenger reported to police that they struck the back of an 18-wheel truck that was attempting to turn into the Big Lots parking lot. The police reports indicate that the truck continued through the parking lot turning on E. Commerce.
According to the report, witnesses indicated that the driver of the vehicle hid something in a nearby street light before police arrived. Police found a bag containing marijuana in a small hole next to the light post where witnesses indicated. The driver identified as 39-year-old Doyle Wayne McLeroy was arrested for Possession of Marijuana in a Drug Free Zone due to the proximity to Victory Life Academy. He was also charged with Tampering with Evidence and had an outstanding warrant.
Loud Music Leads To Drug Arrest
Late Saturday night, Officer Brandon Miller was called to an apartment complex in the 300 block of Bluffview Dr. regarding loud music. Miller arrived at the apartment and the man answering the door offered to turn the music down, but acted nervous according to a police report. After getting permission to enter the apartment, Miller found a small bag believed to be marijuana. Miller arrested 21-year-old Michael Anthony Elleby for Possession of Marijuana.
Man Passed Out In Backyard
At about 12:25 am Sunday morning, Officer Slayton was dispatch to a residence in the 2200 block of 11th Street regarding a man lying passed out in someone’s backyard. Slayton questioned the man on how he got there, but he was too intoxicated to remember. The man, 20-year-old Paul Pannel of Early, was arrested for Public Intoxication.
Vehicle Burglaries at Camelot Apartments
Police are investigating a rash of vehicle burglaries near Camelot Apartments. 6 burglaries were reported police which are believed to have occurred between Thursday night and Friday morning. Numerous items were taken from each vehicle.
Other Arrests
-On Sunday afternoon, Officer Sky Self arrested 40-year-old Chad Beasley for public intoxication on Belle Plain.
-On Saturday morning, Officer Zane Taylor arrested Enrique Ortega, 42, and Leticia Ortega, 37 after a domestic disturbance. They are both charged with Assault Family Violence.
–On Saturday afternoon, Officer Shade Tidwell was called to a business in the 400 block of Center Avenue regarding an intoxicated person. 53-year-old Jeffery Keith Williams was arrested for public intoxication.
–City Marshal Kilburn arrested 50-year-old Joel Ramirez on outstanding warrants on Friday morning. He was also charged with fleeing to elude.
