Brownwood Police Chief Mike Corley released crime statistics from the police department for the month of January along with year-to-date numbers for the months of January for 2010 and 2011.
Corley releases Brownwood Police Department crime statistics on a monthly basis as a program to have a more transparent department to the public. Corley stated that he also looks at these numbers to see where the department needs to focus.
Overall reported crime in Brownwood was down in January by 5% as compared to the previous month. The total number of crimes is down for the month as are the year-to-date totals. There is a decrease of nearly 17% in reported crimes overall year-to-date for January 2011 as compared to January 2010.
Year-to-date 2011 statistics show that 18.6% of crimes are being cleared as compared to 19.8% cleared in year-to-date of 2010. The percentage of crimes that are being cleared is relatively the same when comparing the two years.

The number reported refers to crimes that were assigned a case number and responded to by police. The number cleared refers to how many cases were closed either by an arrest or after further investigation.
