Brownwood Police Chief Mike Corley released crime statistics from the police department for the month of February along with year-to-date numbers for 2011 and 2012.
Corley releases Brownwood Police Department crime statistics on a monthly basis as a program to have a more transparent department to the public. Corley stated that he also looks at these numbers to see where the department needs to focus.
The total number of crimes decreased by 23 incidents in February as compared the previous month. Overall, reported crime in Brownwood decreased by approximately 17% from the previous month. Of these crimes, about 22.8% were cleared for the month of February 2012.
Year-to-date statistics for 2012 show that 20.7% of reported crimes were cleared, as compared to 17.6% of the number of crimes during the same period of 2011. The 2012 total number of reported crimes is up for the year by 67.7% as compared to 2011. The majority of these crimes are larceny theft which was up by 50% as compared to year-to-date numbers for February of 2011.

The number reported refers to crimes that were assigned a case number and responded to by police. The number cleared refers to how many cases were closed either by an arrest or after further investigation.
Two new categories of crimes have been added to this report, Driving While Intoxicated arrests and numbers of motor vehicle accidents. According to reports released in February, DWI arrests are the same for January and February as are the number of motor vehicle accidents. The year-to-date report shows that 2012 has had 12 more DWI arrests than 2011. There has been a decrease of 5% in the number of motor vehicle accidents in 2012 compared to the prior year.
