Brownwood Police Chief Mike Corley released crime statistics from the police department for the month of December along with year-to-date numbers for 2014 and 2015.
Corley releases Brownwood Police Department crime statistics on a monthly basis as a program to have a department that is more transparent to the public. Corley stated that he also looks at these numbers to see where the department needs to focus.
Corley said that there were 82 reported crimes in December which is equal to the previous month. Of the total number of crimes, 35.4% were cleared either by arrest or after further investigation. Cases of assault and burglary of a building were up 16.7% and 100% respectively. Also of note, there were no motor vehicle thefts in December, decreased from two in November.
There were 45 traffic accidents and 4 driving while intoxicated arrests reported in the city of Brownwood for December.
2015 ended with a slightly decreased number of total crimes (year-to-date) than the number reported in 2014 by nearly 11%. Of note, cases of rape were up 13 incidents or 92% from 2014. Cases of burglary of a building were decreased by 30 incidents or 44.8%, no cases of homicide and only one arson year-to-date, which happened in December.
