Brownwood Police Chief Mike Corley released crime statistics from the police department for the month of December along with year-to-date numbers for 2011 and 2012.
Corley releases Brownwood Police Department crime statistics on a monthly basis as a program to have a more transparent department to the public. Corley stated that he also looks at these numbers to see where the department needs to focus.
Corley said that there were 128 reported crimes in December which is slightly increased from the previous month. Of these crimes, 48.4% were cleared either by arrest or after further investigation. Of note, reports of assaults were increased, up 32 incidents during the month of December as compared to November. Year-to-date statistics for 2012 show that larceny theft reports also increased by 12.4% over the same time period last year.
DWI arrests were up year-to-date as well with the Brownwood Police reporting 113 this year compared to 105 from the same period of January to December of last year. According to stats, motor vehicle accidents inside the Brownwood city limits continued a decline for the year with 12% fewer reported year-to-date when compared to 2011 year-to-date.

The number reported refers to crimes that were assigned a case number and responded to by police. The number cleared refers to how many cases were closed either by an arrest or after further investigation.
