Brownwood Police Chief Mike Corley released crime statistics from the police department today for the month of June along with year-to-date numbers. Corley releases Brownwood Police Department crime statistics on a monthly basis as a new program to have a more transparent department to the public. Corley stated that he also looks at these numbers to see where the department needs to focus.
According to the year-to-date crime statistics, 2010 shows a very slight increase in number of cases in each offense category with the exception of larceny theft and arson. In comparison, the monthly numbers also show a slight increase with the exception of burglary of a building which doubled from 3 cases in May to 6 cases in June. Compared to 2009, year-to-date totals of crimes cleared (closed cases) were up as of June 2010 by about 4%. The total number of crimes reported in 2010 year-to-date were also up less than 3% as compared to 2009 year-to-date numbers.

The number reported refers to crimes that were assigned a case number and responded to by police. The number cleared refers to how many cases were closed either by an arrest or after further investigation.
