Brownwood Police Chief Mike Corley released crime statistics from the police department for the month of April along with year-to-date numbers for 2011 and 2012.
Corley releases Brownwood Police Department crime statistics on a monthly basis as a program to have a more transparent department to the public. Corley stated that he also looks at these numbers to see where the department needs to focus.
The total number of crimes decreased by 12 incidents in April as compared to the previous month, showing a decrease of approximately 7.7%. Of these crimes, about 33.7% were cleared for the month of April 2012.
Year-to-date statistics for 2012 show that 24.4% of reported crimes were cleared as compared to 16.9% of the number of crimes during the same period of 2011. The 2012 total number of reported crimes is up for the year by 60.8% as compared to 2011. The majority of these crimes are larceny theft which was up by 84% and assault which increased by 55.4% as compared to year-to-date numbers for April of 2011.
According to reports released in April, DWI arrests decreased 14.3% as compared to March. The number of motor vehicle accidents was equal to the number in March. The year-to-date report shows that 2012 has had 29 more DWI arrests than 2011. There has been a decrease of 4.7% in the number of motor vehicle accidents in 2012 compared to the prior year.

The number reported refers to crimes that were assigned a case number and responded to by police. The number cleared refers to how many cases were closed either by an arrest or after further investigation.
