The Brownwood Police Department is implementing a new program to help with the amount of unclaimed bicycles that are placed into the impound each month, whether they are stolen or misplaced/found. Many people are unaware that they can call the police station after experiencing their bike being stolen, not only to report the crime, but also to see if their bicycle has been recovered.
According to recent Brownwood Police reports, there are several bikes each month that are either stolen from their rightful owners or found on someone property, in which case police are contacted to remove the unwanted property. These bikes are stored in the impound until claimed by their owners. Sometimes there are bicycles that are the same brand, style and color, making it difficult to insure that they are returned to their rightful owners. Officers’ reports do have details that help in the process of identifying the bicycles but not always the owners. The new program will allow area residents who own bicycles to register them with the Brownwood Police Department. Simply call the Brownwood Police Department at 325-646-2525 between the hours of 7:00am-3:00pm, be sure to ask for Elizabeth. Those interested will need to furnish a serial number, model of bicycle, brand and color. This database will allow police to compare serial numbers of bicycles as they are brought to the station and hopefully provide a more efficient way to return them to their proper owners.
