With the 10th Brownwood Reunion Celebration coming up, Mayor Stephen Haynes has put forth a “fitness challenge” to some city departments to participate in the Reunion’s annual running event. The mayor has asked the city administrative staff, police department, and fire department to form teams and compete against each other during the event. This Reunion event usually consists of a 5k run and 1.5 mile walk, but organizers have added the 10k run to commemorate the 10th year of the Reunion.
“It is a proven fact that physical exercise improves our health, productivity, and general contentment with life,” Mayor Haynes said in his written challenge to the departments. “Therefore, let us be good examples for making Brownwood a healthier and happier place to live.”
Mayor Haynes is not challenging these departments to have the fastest teams, but rather to have the most participation in the events. The team with the highest percentage of participation from their department will win the challenge. The winning team will be presented an “inspiring” award at the city council meeting following Reunion.
“It doesn’t matter if you run the 10k or walk the short course,” Haynes said. “Participation is all that counts.”
The mayor provided the departments with a 6 week, 5K run training plan to help them get started.
The Brownwood Reunion Celebration 5K/10K run and 1.5 mile walk is one of the more popular events during Reunion. The event, which is sponsored by Brownwood Regional Medical Center and Landmark Life, will take place on the second day of the Reunion Celebration on the morning of September 18th at the corner of Congress and E. Adams in front of the Lehnis Railroad Museum. Check-in time for the race will be 7am with the 10K starting at 7:30am, 5K starting at 8:00am, and the walk starting shortly thereafter.
Awards will be presented to the first 3 places in each age group, overall male & female & winning team entry. (Teams consist of 3-5 members from a business/group/family, with the top 3 times counting for the team.)
Age groups include 10 & under, 11-14, 15-18, 19-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-59, 60-69, & 70 & over.
Cost to enter the race is $20.00 per individual for preregistration and $25.00 entry fee on race day. T-shirts are guaranteed for the first 300 entries and door prize drawings will take place during the awards ceremony for all participants.
Last year, almost 400 runners participated in the event and organizers have seen this running event grow every year.
