One man died and another was severely injured as a result of a collision that occurred approximately 5 miles north of Brownwood on Highway 279 Monday afternoon.
Texas Department of Public Safety Senior Trooper Sparky Dean stated that 62-year-old Jose Gongora of Brownwood was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Jim Cavanaugh. Gongora’s body was taken to Heartland Funeral Home in Early where arrangements are pending.
Injured in the collision was 34-year-old Daniel Britt McKee of Brownwood. Trooper Dean said that McKee sustained “incapacitating injuries” as a result of the accident.
The DPS report states that McKee was driving a 2003 Mazda Tribute which was traveling south in the northbound lane. Gongora was driving a 2007 Ford Fusion traveling north behind another vehicle not hit in the accident.
The report indicates that the vehicle that was in front of Gongora took evasive action to avoid a head-on crash with McKee’s Mazda. Gongora’s Ford did not react in time to avoid the crash.
The incident is being investigated by Texas Highway Patrol Trooper Sams.
