On Wednesday, February 19, 2020, at approximately 5:00 am, officers of the Brownwood Police Department responded to a convenience store in the 3800 Block of US Hwy 377 South regarding a report of an unresponsive baby.

Upon arrival, officers observed a 2-year-old child with obvious minor injuries being attended to by his mother.  Officers learned that the child was in the care of the mother’s roommate before being brought to the store so that the mother (store employee) could provide care.  The roommate was not on scene to provide additional information.

Seeing the injuries to the child, the mother contacted 911 for medical care and follow-up at the Brownwood Regional Medical Center ER.  Later in the day, the child was care-flighted to Cook Children’s Hospital in Fort Worth due to trauma to the head.

According to information from the Brownwood Police Department, an investigation commenced and detectives met with the roommate at the family’s home and identified him as 33-year-old Zachery Huber of Brownwood.  While conducting the investigation, detectives observed a small green baggy containing a crystal-like substance believed to be methamphetamine as well as a baggy containing suspected marijuana.  Huber was arrested for Possession of a Controlled Substance and Possession of Marijuana and transported to the Brown County Jail.

According to Brownwood Police, on Friday, February 21, Huber was further interviewed about the injuries to the child and admitted to portions of the incident which included striking the child.  A warrant was then obtained then served to Huber for Injury to a Child.  According to Brown County Jail Records, Huber’s bonds total $157,000.
