Brownwood Police have charged a man with 5 counts of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon after he allegedly fired shots into a vehicle on Tuesday afternoon.
22-year-old Robert Dale Woodworth of Brownwood turned himself into police on Tuesday after an investigation into the shooting incident. The victims told police that as they, along with an infant, left an apartment building in the 600 block of Avenue G when they noticed two individuals yelling and making threats to them according to police reports. As they pulled out of the parking lot in their vehicle, the victims claimed to have heard a “pop” that they thought was a tire blowing out. Police reports state that after hearing several more “pops” that came in a rapid succession, the victims realized that it was actually gunfire as the back window of the vehicle shattered. The driver said that he rapidly drove away from the scene returning to his home where he called the police. None of the victims had been struck by the gunshots during the shooting.
As police investigated the vehicle and the incident, they determined that one of the bullets had entered the vehicle near the seat belt of the right rear passenger side and struck the interior panel, making the path of the bullet about 5-6” above a 3-year-old’s head according to reports. No arrest was made at the time of the shooting; however, police stated that Woodworth turned himself in on Tuesday evening.
Police reports state that Woodworth claims that one of the victims had made threatening statements to him at the apartment building. Woodworth did tell authorities that he ran down the stairs of the building and fired some shots and then ran down an alley and fired more shots according to police reports.
Woodworth is being held in Brown County Jail on five counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, one for each occupant of the vehicle.
