Brownwood News – James Helms, 45 years old and formerly from Brownwood, was arrested by Maine State Police in Northport on Sunday. Helms was arrested in connection to a Texas Ranger investigation involving sex crimes allegedly committed in the Brownwood area over one year ago. News of Helms’ arrest was initially published on WGME and was also reported on KTAB.
According to the WGME report, Maine State Troopers arrested James Helms at a house he had been staying on Route 1 Sunday morning. Helms had been living in Maine for the past year, working as a handyman in the mid-coast. Helms allegedly fled Brownwood last year as Texas Rangers were investigating the sex crimes there, according to Maine State Troopers.
Reports also note three cell phones from Helms were seized during the course of the arrest. Content in those phones will be reviewed for any connection to the Texas crimes or new sexual images involving children downloaded while Helms has been in Maine.
James Helms is currently being held at the Waldo County Jail, awaiting extradition to Brownwood.
