After 14 straight wins this season, the Brownwood Lions ended their playoff run in the State Semi-Final game against the Carthage Bulldogs in the final seconds of the game.
In the end with two seconds left in the ballgame, Brownwood had a chance to force overtime on fourth and goal from inside the five yard line, but Graylon Brown’s pass to Jaxon Shipley fell incomplete. Brownwood players, coaches, and fans stood stunned as the clock ran out giving Carthage the win 35-28.
A battle was fought throughout the entire game, touchdown after touchdown was answered by the opposing team. All in attendance endured one of the most emotional games of the season as was predicted by much of the media and sports authorities.
It was an unexpected blow to all on the Brownwood side, a truly heartbreaking game to end the season many felt sure would bring that coveted 8th State title.

Scoring plays and highlights from our live game updates are below.
1st Quarter:
*Derek Longoria kicked off to Carthage who received it at the 17 yard line and ran it to the 23 yard line.
*The Bulldogs’ first possession as well as the Lions first possession was scoreless.
*With just a minute left in the first quarter, Carthage took their second possession of the game and a 74 yard scoring drive was completed when the Bulldogs had a 2 yard carry to score a touchdown. The extra point was no good. Score was 0-6.
*Graylon Brown connected with Jaxon Shipley who leaped into the air to catch the 23 yard pass ending the first quarter with Lions in possession 1st and 10 at the Carthage 27 yard line.
2nd Quarter:
*Stehl Ratliff took it 12 yards into the end zone. This was a 74 yard scoring drive. Dillon Ellis made good on the extra point and Brownwood was ahead 7-6.
*7:38 of the quarter, Carthage completed a pass for a 22yard touchdown, followed by a 2 point conversion. The score was then 7-14.
*Carthage executed an onside kick which was fumbled by the Lions and then recovered by Carthage. The Bulldogs took possession at the BHS 44yd line.
*Carthage on 3rd and 5 fumbled at the 21 yard line, Brownwood recovered at the 22 yd line.
*0:57 left in the quarter Brownwood took possession on the CHS 21 yard line with 3rd and 12. Brown tossed a lateral to Vance McShan who then fired a pass to Jaxon Shipley into the end zone! The game was tied for a second time 14-14.
*Carthage received the kick off by Matthew McCrane, running it down to the BHS 25 yard line. After a two more plays, Carthage at the 4 yard line carried it in for a touchdown and made the extra point. Carthage was leading again at the half, 14-21.
*Just 9 seconds left in the quarter, a pass was completed for a 4 yard touchdown that finished off a 25 yard scoring drive. The extra point was good. The score was 14-21.
*First half ends with a pass to Jaxon Shipley at the 43 yard line with the clock running down.
3rd Quarter:
*Second half begins with Brownwood having possession of the ball.
*9:50 left in the quarter, Graylon Brown ran a keeper for a 9 yard touchdown. This capped a 68 yard scoring drive. Ellis was good for the extra point. The game was tied for the third time at 21-21.
*Carthage on 4th and 9 attempt, Brownwood sacked the QB! The Lions took possession on the Carthage 39 yard line.
*Lions received at the 34 yard line which would have been a first down, but a penalty of personal foul for roughing the kicker gave Carthage an automatic first down.
*5:40 left in the quarter Brownwood’s Tyler Harth sacked the quarter back on 4th and 9. Lions took possession.
*3:06 to go in the quarter Jaxon Shipley received a 6 yard pass at the 13 yard line, just inches short of the 1st down. After an official time out for measurement, Carthage took possession.
*1:23 on the clock, on 3rd and 20 Carthage made a 29 yard pass for a touchdown. Extra point was good. Score was now 21-28.
4th Quarter:
*11:19 on the clock, Brownwood’s next possession was scoreless and Derek Longoria punted to the 4 yd line.
*6:51 left in the game, Levi Perez made a 9 yard touchdown and completed an 80 yard scoring drive. Ellis was good for the extra point. Score was 28-28.
*3:41 on the clock and Carthage completed a 29 yard touchdown and made the extra point. This completed a 66 yard scoring drive. The score was 28-35.
*Brownwood’s next and last possession, the Lions drove the ball over and over until they reached the 5 yard line for a 1st and goal with just 2 sec. in the game. Brown at the CHS 5 yd line threw to Jaxon Shipley who caught it, but out of bounds.
*Pass incomplete, the final score Carthage won 28-35 over Brownwood.
