Brownwood Lions were able to make a big 14-49 win against the Snyder Tigers at home to secure a place in the playoffs. The game was a sweet victory as Brownwood High School celebrated Pink Out for breast cancer awareness and Senior Night as the last home game of the season.
Head Coach Chuck Howard was very pleased with the win and how his players stepped up by filling in vacancies left from players injured in previous games.
“I was very pleased, just proud of our team, proud of our seniors with the leadership they have shown,” said Howard. “We had so many new players on the field. We expect players to step up and play.
Howard stated that some younger players shined during the game and others that made adjustments to new positions. He said that the team made some adjustments at the half due to injuries and that he felt the team’s effort was “tremendous.”
“We had a lot of players step up, accept responsibility and played well,” Howard stated. “I’m proud of the players, their effort and how they executed despite adversity.”
One of the moments he was most proud of in the game was the team’s goal line stance against Snyder’s drive for a touchdown late in the third quarter. The team held Snyder in four plays which were inside the 5 yard line and two of these that were within the 1 yard line. Grant Lewis made a massive block stopping SHS’s quarterback from scoring.
“It was great to see, our guys made some great plays and Grant knocked him out just before he could cross the goal line,” said Howard proudly.
Howard continued to praise his team, “I love our players, we play hard, we don’t always execute well, but they play hard and when you do, good things happen.”
The statistics in this game were much better than some previous games of the season; however, Howard stated that he doesn’t rely on many statistics, taking each game one by one.
“I don’t care about statistics, the only statistic I care about is the end score on the board,” Howard explained. He continued to explain how in this game the team played as he expected them to, with heart. “Brownwood is a blue collar, tough town, and that’s how we want to play football. We are going to continue that.”
By winning the game against Snyder, Brownwood Lions qualified for the playoffs by securing at least fourth place in district. The district ranking will be determined by losses in next week’s games. Brownwood could possibly move into third place depending on which teams win next week. Howard continued to state that Brownwood is in a very tough district with Big Spring and Stephenville having two of the best offenses and Wylie having one of the best defenses in the state.
The outcome of the game really made Senior Night special for the seniors on the team, according to Howard. “These players put in so much investment, so much time—some since the seventh grade. They deserve to enjoy and celebrate this time in their lives.”
The Lions will face Big Spring next Friday night on the road. Kickoff will be at 7:30 p.m. Lion fans are encouraged to make the trip and support the team as they end their regular season and look forward to their 6th straight year in the state playoffs.
