The Brownwood Lions overcame a 28-14 halftime deficit and advanced to the regional playoff round by taking out the Seminole Indians 41-28 in their Class 3A Division-II area round playoff game Friday night at San Angelo Stadium.
Game Summary:
Brownwood won the coin toss and elected to defer possession to Seminole. Seminole starts out the game with a first possession, 66 yd drive, in 8 plays making the score 0-7.
In Brownwood’s first drive of the game, RB Stehl Ratliff makes a 41 yd run before making a 3 yd touchdown in the next play. Ellis delivers the extra point, the score now tied up at 7-7.
In Seminole’s next possession, they carried the ball 85 yds in 11 plays, keeping possession of the ball for 6 minutes 52 seconds. The extra point is good and the score is then 7-14 .
At the beginning of the 2nd quarter, Seminole finishes up a series of plays for a touchdown and extra point, bringing the score to 7-21.
Ratliff comes up big carry to the 10 yd line, setting up the next scoring drive. RB Derek Longoria pushes through for an 8 yd touchdown. Score is 14-21.
Seminole then scores again making the score 14-28 to end the first half.
At half time, Coach Shipley reminded players that “We have been in this position before”…and ”Don’t give up, we are a second half team”. Lions came out motivated and ready.
In the first possession and the first play of the second half, Ratliff makes a 52 yard touchdown run bringing the score to 21 – 28.
The Lions kicked up the defense by putting pressure on Seminole’s quarter back and making important quarterback sacks forcing the Indians to punt.
The next Brownwood possession, Ratliff carries for 15 yds. The next couple of plays set Longoria up for another touchdown, making the game a 28-28 tie with 11:56 left in the 3rd quarter.
Seminole gets the ball back to go inside the Brownwood 30 yd line, but after a nice tackle by Brownwood’s DB Luke Chastain it forces the Indians to try a 29 yd field goal which Longoria blocks and the ball rolls out of bounds at the 27 yard line where Brownwood takes over.
QB Vance McShan runs the ball for 20 yards. Three plays later, Longoria drives in another touchdown. With less than 5 minutes in the 4th quarter, the score is 35-28.
On the Indian’s next possession, LB Tyler Harth sacks Seminole’s quarterback at the 2 yd line, where Seminole makes a punt fake on 4th & long where the pass is intercepted by DB Logan Gough, who runs it in for a touchdown. The score now 41-28.
On Seminole’s last possession, Luke Chastain intercepts the ball and seals the Brownwood win and Area Championship in a thriller of a game.
Brownwood moves on face Wimberley Friday 11/27/09 at 2:00 in Copperas Cove for the Class 3A Division-II Regional Championship.
