The Brownwood Lions encountered another disappointing loss Friday night with a 38-16 final score to the Wylie Bulldogs.  Head Coach Chuck Howard was disappointed in poor tackling and penalties causing missed opportunities to score.

He explained that this was a winnable ball game, but there were penalties and opportunities missed that ultimately cost the Lions points and the game.

“We had the hit on the quarterback, but we ended up getting the hit late,” said Howard.   “Then we got the late penalty out of bounds.  These kids are fighting hard; they aren’t trying to make mistakes.”

He summed up the first half as shaky and uneasy.  “In the first half, the team was their own worst enemy.  For some reason, our kids were a little uneasy in the first half.  The offense was a little shaky.  Defensively we did some good things, but were not tackling well,” said Howard.  “We just didn’t get the tackles.”

Howard stated that the second half, the offense executed well, but that the team continued to play weak on defense.

“We did a lot of great things offensively in the second half.  We have got to continue to work on defense and get better.  Defensively we have got to get stops,” said Howard.  “We have got to run, like I’ve said before, if a team is one dimensional, it’s going to catch up with you.”

In the second half, Howard thought the team had settled down a little bit and started to play better overall.

“We settled down in the second half and did a good job,” said Howard.  “We, the coaches, have confidence in the team, but they have got to have confidence in themselves.”

He stated that the running game was a little better this week, and that in the second half, Braxton Kilgo executed very well.

Howard stated that despite mistakes, the team is playing hard.  He explained how the team must improve for the game against Sweetwater next week.  “Sweetwater is very good; they have skilled kids and a good running back.  It will be a different kind of challenge.”

Howard explained that the coaches are going to work hard to help the team prepare to win next week against Sweetwater.

“We have got to get better, the young kids have got to grow up and we have got to get tackles,” said Howard.  “We can’t win ball games playing that way.”

He stated that the team and coaches plan to work hard next week and be ready for Sweetwater.    He reiterated that the coaching staff has faith in the team, confidence that they can correct the mistakes made this week and look forward to another win.

The Lions go to a 1-3 record on the season going into next week’s game in Sweetwater.
